What our teens are saying...

I met Ms. Cicely when I was 14 but I didn’t get pregnant until I was 17. I remembered how nice and easy to talk to she was, so I called her when I found out I was pregnant. She was so caring and polite and helped me learn to take care of my body during my pregnancy and care for my baby. She taught me how to breastfeed my son and I did really well for 6 months until he started eating food. I don’t know if I would have been able to do this by myself with her help.

I didn’t know anything about babies but was excited to be pregnant. I didn’t have much support besides my boyfriend. I found Cicely in a Facebook group for young moms and asked her to teach me about childbirth and taking care of my baby so she wouldn’t get sick. My cousin had a C-section, and I knew I didn’t want to go through that so I asked Cicely to help me learn to have my baby vaginally. My baby was born with no issues and I am glad I got help from Cicely.

When my 16-year-old daughter told us she was pregnant, I knew just who to call! Cicely worked with a friend as her doula and my friend was happy with the support she received so I reached out to Cicely to see if she would help us. She stepped in right away and was really good at helping my daughter during labor and birth.

I took some classes with Cicely because I wanted to make sure I was prepared to take care of my son by myself. She taught me a lot of things I had no idea about and gave me information if I needed extra help after my son was born. She helped me get a breast pump, a crib, and clothes for my baby too which was helpful because I didn’t have much money.

Torrie
Cicely was my aunt’s doula and I had watched her care for my newborn cousin a few times. So, when I got pregnant, I asked her to be my doula and help me with my baby. I took all the classes and talked to her often about becoming a parent. She came to the hospital and motivated me not to give up and ways to help with the pain. She was the best and I tell people about her all the time.

“Allowing yourself to be attentive to your postpartum mental and/or emotional vulnerability is one of the most selfless and courageous acts that a mother can make for herself and her child(ren). Honoring the significantly impactful and profound changes that you and your body have experienced can have tremendously beneficial short and long-term outcomes. Including, but not limited to, authentic relationship building with your newborn(s) and a more positive parenting experience.” – Ashley Shelley, LPC-MHSP
